Numerous challenges and complexities impact today’s students and the adults in their lives: Long-standing issues like racism and the achievement gap persist, even as newer concerns emerge, such as post-pandemic burn-out, the polarization of civic discourse, the ever-reaching presence of social media, and the upcoming demographic cliff for higher education. Amidst these challenges, the 2024 ICCTE conference theme calls us to imagine new possibilities with a disposition of hope rather than despair. While education, faith-based or otherwise, cannot serve as either personal or societal savior, what role might current and future educators, teacher educators, and administrators in K-12 and higher education play in bringing hope and healing amidst challenge?  

 

Strand 1: Imagination 

This strand addresses questions, such as: What role does imagination play in a Christian philosophy of education? How might we foster and assess Christian imagination in preservice teachers and K-12 children? What processes might help us as individuals and institutions to employ Christian imagination as we engage with challenges in education? What new technologies, innovations, or partnerships might help us imagine new ways forward through challenges?

   

Strand 2: Hope 

This strand addresses questions, such as: What role does hope play in a Christian philosophy of education? As Christian scholars, teachers, and leaders, for what do we hope, and how do we take courageous action in hope? How might we develop and assess hope as a disposition in preservice teachers and K-12 children? What encouraging research evidence might build up our collective hope in an area of challenge?  

 

We welcome submission of proposals of a variety of types of scholarly work connected to the conference theme, including, but not limited to: 

• Conceptual / theoretical work, including faith integration, philosophy of education, or the theological underpinnings for imagination and hope in education; 

• Original research studies, completed or in progress; 

• Presentations of innovative or promising programs, partnerships, or practices 

 

Proposals that include the following components will be prioritized:  

• Explicit faith integration  

• Structured opportunity for audience participation 

• Clear theoretical foundation or research-based evidence 

 

 

Proposal Types

 

Presentation:  

Presentations typically highlight scholarly work that is complete, or nearly complete, including theoretical research, applied research, action research, literature reviews, conceptual work. This may include evidence-based programs, partnerships, or practices. Presentations typically last 20-30 minutes, use PowerPoint or other presentation software, and invite audience interaction in some manner. Two or three related presentations may be grouped together into a session as determined by conference organizers.  

Presentation proposals should consist of a title and a 250-500 word abstract identifying the topic/research question, methodology, results, implications, and relevance to the ICCTE audience and conference theme. The proposal should not contain any identifying references to the presenter(s). Include a separate brief statement about audience participation/engagement.  

 

Symposium:  

A symposium is a session organized by a convener with 2-3 papers/presenters exploring a common theme. The convener will serve as organizer, facilitator, and discussant for the session. A symposium might also be a panel facilitated by an ICCTE Research or Special Interest Group. 

Symposium proposals should consist of (1) a title; (2) a paragraph providing the overarching thread that unites the papers/presenters convened and its relevance to the ICCTE audience and conference theme; and (3) a 1-3 paragraph summary of each individual paper/presentation included in the symposium. Include a separate brief statement about audience participation/ engagement. 

 

Roundtable: 

Roundtables provide opportunities for active discussions, typically 20-30 minutes in length. For example, a presenter might seek feedback on scholarly work in progress or an ICCTE SIG might sponsor a discussion around a common interest. Any topic, research, or promising practice related to the conference theme and/or ICCTE purpose is appropriate. The facilitator should plan to provide an overview of the roundtable topic and facilitate discussion between attendees. 

Roundtable proposals should consist of a title and a 250-500 word abstract that includes a topic description, link to the conference theme, and relevance to the ICCTE audience. Examples of discussion questions are encouraged. The proposal should not contain any identifying references to the facilitator(s). 

 

Workshop: 

Workshops provide opportunities for participants to learn about a topic or engage in collaborative work around a topic related to the conference theme. Workshop facilitators may request 30 or 60 minute time slots. Workshop examples might include moderated processes for imaginative problem solving, such as design thinking, imagineering, or other problem solving protocols; professional development focused on a novel research method or promising pedagogy; or collaborative work sessions focused on a particular topic. 

Workshop proposals should consist of a title and a 250-500 word abstract summarizing the goal of the workshop and include a topic description, link to the conference theme, and relevance to the ICCTE audience. The proposal should not contain any identifying references to the facilitator(s).

We encourage submission of proposals by September 1, 2023. Proposals received by this date will be reviewed during the month of September, and individuals will be notified of the committee’s decision by October 1, 2023. Additional proposals will be reviewed on a monthly basis until all conference presentation slots are filled. Early submissions are encouraged and will provide presenters with more time to secure institutional funding for attendance and travel.  

 

If your research or work does not seem to fit neatly into the conference theme yet seems important to the mission and community of ICCTE, the committee encourages you to submit a proposal.
